Development began in the Central West District in the late 1800s. At that time, the landscape was primarily sand dunes, and early residents had to clear the drifts that would pile up around houses and walkways. Despite the sand, the neighborhood grew quickly, because the home prices were much more reasonable than other areas of San Francisco. Many of the early residents were Irish immigrants and medical students attending the then-new University of California medical campus.

There are a variety of local attractions for Central West District residents, including the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Lake Merced, San Francisco Zoo and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The Golden Gate Park covers over 74,000 acres and includes more than 1,200 historic structures. The managing organization is also responsible for protecting 27 rare and endangered species that are native to the area. Popular sites are the ruins of the Sutro Baths, once an extravagant swimming facility that could accommodate up to 10,000 visitors, Point Bonita Lighthouse and Fort Funston. Activities include walking, hiking, birding, horseback riding, surfing, biking and camping.

Lake Merced is both a natural habitat and a popular recreational site. Birds, waterfowl and other wildlife are prevalent, making it a great venue for wildlife viewing. The lake is surrounded by parklands and visitors may enjoy walking, boating and fishing on site. Golf is also available at the nearby Harding Park Municipal Golf Course, which has an 18-hole course and a nine-hole course.

The San Francisco Zoo offers another opportunity for locals and visitors to get close to nature. Beginning in 2002, the zoo began updating its facilities to enhance the experience for its visitors. Already the zoo has redesigned its entrance, expanded its Children’s Zoo, added new exhibits and improved its ancillary offerings with a new gift shop and café. Future plans include the addition of a new African savanna exhibit and a Great Ape Forest.

Cultural activity can be found at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Over 250 students attend classes at the Conservatory, taught by a distinguished and experienced staff. The Conservatory offers after-school programs for children and evening classes for adults, as well as private instruction, in music and the arts.
